Moors Valley Golf Club has presented a cheque for over three thousand pounds to Prostate Cancer UK.

The donation was the culmination of the efforts of the players over the last two years.

Attending the presentation from Prostate Cancer was Ian Bell – Southampton Hub Coordinator and from the golf club; Tony Legg – Men’s Captain, Bob Morgan – 2019/20 Senior & Veterans Captain, Roger Gear – 2020/21 Senior & Veterans Captain, Alan Excell – Club Captain 2019/21, along with a good turnout of Senior & Veterans golfers.

Tony Legg said, “We are only a small club of under 200 members, and to raise such an amount over the last two years with all the disruption from the Covid pandemic is a fantastic achievement”

Bob Morgan said: “The combination of inclement weather and Covid seriously restricted the series of events in 2019/20, but our generous members still managed to raise nearly £550”

Roger Gear said: “I am absolutely delighted with the tremendous support that our members have given to this extremely important charity. Their generosity has far exceeded my wildest expectations. The past year was very difficult because of Covid restrictions but nevertheless we were able to raise money from a variety of golfing events including competitions, a quiz and a number of social ‘fun’ evenings during the summer.”

Ian Bell concluded the presentation with a big thank you to the members and a brief illustration of how the donation would be used.

“Prostate Cancer will use your donation towards supporting our 3 main streams of activities;

Improving diagnosis, we need to develop a more accurate test as the current PSA test is not overly accurate and can return false positives

Improve the treatments available, including improved Radio Therapy and better hormone therapies.

Lastly, supporting volunteers with “presentations”, various leaflets and publications. And the availability of a specialist nurses telephone helpline available 5 days a week, which anyone can call to talk about concerns, treatments etc

And from the Prostate Cancer organiser, Vikki: “It is great to hear that Moors Valley Golf Club (Senior & Veterans Section & Men’s section) have been fundraising for us – we’re so appreciative of the support. Over £3000 to pay in is absolutely amazing and we hope you’re proud of what you’ve achieved because we certainly are.”
