Residents in Verwood are being invited to comment on plans to extend the 30mph speed limit on Edmondsham Road.
The proposal would move the current limit further out to the brow of the hill, bringing the entrance to Heathpoult Road within the 30mph zone. At present that section of road sits within the national speed limit.
Dorset Council has opened a formal consultation on the change, with comments accepted until 27 March.
Local Dorset councillors representing Verwood say they have been raising the issue for several months after concerns were highlighted by residents living in the Potters Wood estate.
They say the consultation is a legal step required before any speed limit change can be introduced.
Councillors described the consultation as “a positive step”, although they acknowledged it would not solve speeding concerns on its own.
They added that enforcement would still be needed but said the change would bring the entrance to new housing in Heathpoult Road within the same 30mph limit commonly applied to similar roads in the town.
The consultation is limited to the specific section of Edmondsham Road rather than wider speeding issues in the area.
Residents can submit their views, either for or against the proposal, before the deadline later this month.
