Verwood brass bands celebrate national finals milestone

Two brass bands from Verwood have represented the town at the National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain, with one competing at the highest level for the first time.

Verwood Concert Brass and Verwood Town Band both qualified for the prestigious national finals, taking on some of the country’s leading brass bands at competitions in London and York.

Verwood Concert Brass made its debut in the Championship Section final at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Saturday 3 October, finishing 18th out of 20 competing bands.

The performance marked an important milestone for the band, which had earned its place among the country’s elite brass ensembles.

Under the direction of conductor Kevin Smith, the musicians competed against established names from across the British brass band movement.

Meanwhile, Verwood Town Band travelled to York for the Second Section national final on Saturday 19 September, where it finished 15th out of 19 bands.

The Town Band was also conducted by Kevin Smith, making it a particularly notable year for the musical director, who led both Verwood ensembles to national championship appearances.

The National Brass Band Championships bring together bands that have qualified through regional competitions, with separate sections reflecting different competitive levels.

For Verwood, having two bands competing at national level in the same year highlights the strength of the town’s brass band tradition.

The performances also attracted attention beyond the UK, with French brass music publication Trompette Actus including Verwood Concert Brass in its coverage of the Championship Section final.
