Buster Merryfield grave vandalised in Verwood

Fans of the classic BBC sitcom Only Fools and Horses have reacted with shock after the grave of actor Buster Merryfield was vandalised.

Merryfield, best known for playing the war-storytelling character Uncle Albert, died in 1999 at the age of 78.

He is buried alongside his wife Iris in Verwood Cemetery.

Reports say the grave was defaced by vandals, leaving fans of the long-running comedy upset and angry.

The show ran from 1981 until 2003 and remains one of the most popular British sitcoms of all time.

A crowdfunding campaign has now been launched by members of the Only Fools and Horses Appreciation Society to help repair the damage.

Fans have condemned the vandalism online, describing the actor as a much-loved figure whose legacy should be respected.

Verwood Council says it is getting a quote to carry out the repairs.
