Emergency crews request better parking around schools

Firefighters from Verwood Fire Station have urged those picking up children from schools in Verwood to park more considerately.

A post on Facebook from the Fire Station says they had to request one car to move to enable their Fire Engine to successfully travel along Howe Lane near Verwood First School and Emmanuel Church of England Middle School around 3pm.

The crew said on Monday: “Following a call this afternoon we travelled the length of Howe Lane during the school run this afternoon following complaints of bad parking.

“The road was slightly quieter than normal, yet despite this, we still requested one car move to enable us to complete our journey. When parking please consider not only emergency vehicles but other large vehicles that maybe not be able to pass through narrow gaps!”

The ongoing problem was recently highlighted on VerwoodToday.co.uk when Verwood First School Headteacher Mr Parsons reminded parents about the importance of parking safely after monitoring the drop-off and pick up after witnessing a number of incidents.

Mr Christopher, Head of School at Emmanuel Middle School also felt the need to write to parents about it: “If you are dropping off please do so without blocking dropped curbs or on double yellow lines outside the campus gates. It would be devastating if someone was injured.

“Blocking these areas makes it difficult for all users to check for oncoming traffic. I am aware of some near accidents and collisions in the past week. We also need to show consideration for local residents.”
